Buddhijibir Moynatodonto

Director's Note

The famous play by G.P. Deshpande, which the professor-playwright-director, Ashok Mukhopadhyay translated as ‘Andhajuger Manush’, underwent extensive editing, refinement, and adaptation when we embarked on our journey from Prachyo. Revered Ashok Mukhopadhyay named this revised script ‘Buddhijibhir Moynatodonto’. In the context of 2021, we aimed to view this play anew, a play that ultimately speaks of humanism, seeks to understand the voice of the common man, the farmer, and the worker.

Shashwata Banerjee is the protagonist of this play, who wants to speak for everyone but ultimately finds himself in solitude. Through this play, we search for that solitary individual, whom we can describe as unique and unparalleled. Exiled from family, society, love, and almost every phase of life, even from the university with which he is associated, he ends up alone. Thus, this play also speaks of an isolated individual, a lonely person. In a broader sense, he can be termed subaltern, i.e., marginalized. We can describe him as someone distinct, unique, and different from everyone else. Through this play, we explored his journey. What is the life of that unique individual like? What are his thoughts? This play attempts to find that out and simultaneously tries to stand beside the common man. It narrates how society and the state isolate someone who stands by the common man.

Synopsis of Play

‘In this errant continent, in true proposition,

There is no land for you and me.’

A Marxist intellectual, steadfast in his ideals and commitments, faces an investigation. Various charges were raised against him in that serious courtroom. He was constantly beaten with an invisible whip. His past is revealed to be a long and painful story of humiliation, betrayal and failure. Gradually, all the kites in the sky turned black and came down in his dreams. We live in a society where we have to search the dictionary again and again to find the meaning of the words like individual freedom, democracy, where masks stand and act as human beings, and the people who survive the fight are encouraged to leave the field and run away. In the thick fog of unbelief, no face can be seen clearly; in the land of famine, we hear only word after word.

He will ask for forgiveness; but to whom?

He will plead for his life; But why?

The embers of fire hidden in the left side of his chest still wait, one day the song of life will sprout within the hard dry stone of the prison.
