Quarantine
Director's Note
Oh fallen leaves,
If you ever call again,
Keep that lost dream in mind,
If you call, if you call.
I’ll laugh, I’ll cry again,
I’ll drown in the whirlpool of life,
I’ll leave a mark
Between thunder and death.
These lines resemble my journey of doing theatre, which continues even now. Shibram Chakraborty once wrote in a story – the path of Kolkata is like a lethal path felt in the world and there is no second! Even the belief in dreams fades away. Kolkata feels like a nondescript, where the dreams don’t come true.
Leaving aside the dreams, I have found belief. The belief that ties me to the Prachyo theatre group. As a freelance director, I have been given the task of working on this play and have stayed for a few more days dealing with the technicalities and routines of the theatre. The belief of participating in this play and the belief of staging this play by the Prachyo theatre group, I have only tried to put it together correctly standing in the place of a director. What is that belief? What is that path that the audience will discover in this play in a new form? I have kept that mystery aside for the dark chairs in the audience hall.
Some people are enjoying in this world, some are crying, some are dying, some are silently watching, and I am creating art. I am trying to keep myself and others very, very good. That’s it. Then one day I’ll leave. Thank you.
Synopsis of Play
Bimala, a girl who comes to this country in search of work without any documents, finds shelter at the residence of a social worker, Mallika. Through a series of events at the border checkpoint, Mallika meets Alapon Nath who is a lawyer and they develop a live-in relationship.
In the meantime, Bimala marries Edayet. As a dowry to their marriage, comes Rani– Bimala’s niece, who is an orphaned daughter of deceased parents.
Driven by suppressed love, Rani arrives at the crossroads of her adolescence and youth. Due to the poverty of the family and the illness of the child, Bimala’s brother Nitai and his acquaintance Rustom comes here, hiding in the darkness of the night, in search of work. They are accommodated at Edayet ‘s house. Rustom dreams of participating in a dance reality show in Kolkata. His struggle keeps his art alive. Rani and Rustom become attracted towards each other amid the innocent conspiracy of age. Edayet, who keeps Rani away from the so-called bad world outside the home is driven to madness. News of Nitai and Rustom reaches the border guards, who captures them. Edayet is murdered . Mentally distressed Rani, gets raped by a group of miscreants and hung to death. Alapon and Mallika unwaveringly turns away from the truth. Selfishness blinds people on the path of extreme darkness. Life becomes a poisonous “Quarantine”.
